Cross Roads 2005 Tent Raising
loading the tent
Pastor Charles Olivieri, Lay Pastor Carol Grimes and Head Deacon Ely Grimes
pull the tent out of storage in preparation for Cross Roads Rally 2005.
Loading the 800lb tent
The BIG TENT is about 800 pounds of canvas, not counting the poles and stakes.  We were not equipped with
any power lifts or other tools that could raise that much weight onto the back of a pickup truck.
Almost on the cart!
It was amazing to watch our church leaders use simple things to accomplish difficult tasks.
God is awesome!

Don Nelson and Carol Grimes developed a relay system to load the scores of stakes and poles onto the trailer.

The platforms for the stage sit neatly in storage waiting for the day when they are needed.

Once everything was loaded Deacon Grimes drove his truck and trailer to the tent site where the workers
waited to unload and begin to set up the tent.  Thank God not EVERYONE was gray haired!  Left to right:
Paxton Grimes, Ely Grimes, Charles Olivieri, Scott Grimes, Don Nelson, Paxton's friend Rick, and Tom Jennings.

Paxton Grimes, next to the vehicle, brought Rick (in red bandana) and an air compressor to power the
jack hammer so the stakes could be buried deeply.  Ely Grimes, in orange cap and white t-shirt, made
some aluminum center poles.  Scott Grimes tests the base of the pole with his foot.

The tent strips were spread out and the iron stakes drilled into the ground.  Pictured from left:

Carol Grimes patches the tent.

Pastor, Paxton and Rick jackhammer a stake.

The guys lined up waiting for their turn to help.  From left, Scott Grimes, Anthony Olivieri, John Peterson, Tom Jennings.
Meanwhile, the girls watched from the other side of the tent and marvel at how guys never know what to do with
their hands if they aren't working.  Do I put them on my hips, in my pockets, fold my arms, hang them by my side?
We decided they were singing that song, "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em."

The new poles Ely made are lightweight alumninum but the guys are so happy to have something else
to do that they all flock to help raise and center them.

Of course every job site needs a boss.  Carol Grimes directs as John Paul helps to center.

"Happy Helper" Tom praises Carol's supervisory skills as "Happy Helper" Anthony uses the latest
in modern technology to make sure the bubble agrees that the pole is plumb.

John Paul holds the pole secure as Paxton and Rick take a much needed break from the jackhammer task.

It seems like every year we forget to hook up the pulley before the poles are raised.

So, as usual, we get the ladder and someone climbs up with the pulley.
No problem, just a little scary.

Pole one is up, pole two is on its way.

Keep the poles centered.

Workers crawl under the tent to pull the ropes from inside, while others stay outside to help
